Mahjong, A Pocket Edition

Mahjong is a tile-based game deeply rooted in. Chinese culture. Like many other Asian families, Mahjong serves as an invaluable way for me to connect with my relatives and heritage. We spend many hours around the table, sipping tea and playing Mahjong at family gatherings and holidays.

As Mahjong is widely played by the older Asian generation, it has seen a decline in popularity amongst young people. This set aims to promote Mahjong to today’s; therefore, these Mahjong cards are portable and designed to reflect this generation’s bold style while honouring the traditional nature of the original tiles.

The type design was inspired by wood-carved sets. Thus, the vertical downstrokes are thicker than the horizontal strokes to represent thee heavier lines produced when carving along the grain of the wood.

This project has been a labour of love and way for me to connect with and celebrate my roots. My intention for this project is to showcase the traditional Chinese characters of Mahjong up front, and entice people to understand their meaning.
